Read Across America Day
Friday, March 1st is Read Across America Day! Let's celebrate by dressing up as our favorite book character. This is a fun way to acknowledge all of the wonderful characters we come across in great books! Masks and weapons should not be brought to school. We will also have a school-wide reading time, where all students and staff will stop everything else and READ, READ, READ!
Journalism Club
Here is the latest article from our Journalism Club:
Strings
Violin, Viola, Cello and Bass. Do you want to play any of these instruments? Well, then you should join Strings in fifth grade! Strings is taught by Ms. Lloyd. Growing up, music was a big part of Ms. Lloyd’s life. At a young age, she learned to sing and play many instruments like the violin, cello and piano. She loves working with the fifth graders and has been the Strings teacher at MVES for four years.
When you first start strings, you will have to earn your “bow license.” You can do this by showing Ms. Lloyd you know how to hold a bow properly and keep it safe.
Strings meets two times per week for forty-five minutes during core extension. On Fridays, students may choose to come to Strings to learn extra songs and have extra practice. In a typical rehearsal, students come in, unpack, and tune instruments. All students play two to three songs and learn to read music, hold instruments, and work together as a group.
There are three concerts every year: fall, spring and one at Bull Run Middle School. The spring concert theme is “Through the Decades” and features a Quizlet in which the audience answers questions about music.
In conclusion, Strings is a great program that all should join. It is a fun way to learn music. The Journalism Club encourages rising fifth graders to join Strings next year!

Watch D.O.G.S.
We continue to need volunteers during the school days! We have several students who need someone to listen while they practice their reading skills, help with math, a mentor to go on a walk around the building, and of course, a father-figure to help on the playground. Please have participated in a volunteer training and sign-up here:
Lunch Visitors
Please remember to sign up if you are planning to have lunch with your child(ren) in the cafeteria. It is important that we have enough seats for visitors. All visitors over the age of 18 must have a photo ID to enter the building. Lunch times and the link to sign up are on the MVES webpage. Navigate to Family Engagement (button at top) and Families at Lunch for details. You can also use this handy link to sign up: MVES Families at Lunch
School Family Liaison Chat
We are excited to have hosted our first Multicultural Night last Friday! It was fabulous as MVES families displayed, presented, and shared aspects of their countries, cultures, and heritages.
An especial, "Thank you!" to our Battlefield STAR and National Honor Society students who have shared their time and talents to mentor our Cougars with reading, math, and honing learning skills. We are truly grateful!
